Game Review of The Rise of Atlantis

Many gamers may be yawning at this point at the thought of another match-three-in-a-row game entering the puzzle play genre. Rise of Atlantis, however, tries to put an original spin on this idea through use of historical education about these ancient civilizations that are peppered throughout the game’s entire storyline. The game itself is pretty easy to pick up from the very beginning – players just left-click on tiles to swap them. Tiles disappear if a three-in-a-row match occurs either horizontally or vertically, with other tiles filling in the gaps. An artefact is formed once all of its requisite pieces are liberated through the bottom of the screen. The game level ends once these items are collected. It is game over if the player fails to collect these pieces before time runs out. Constructing an artefact is a major milestone in the game and aids you in helping to recover the lost city of Atlantis.

As one can see, the game is remarkably simple in concept, yet challenging nonetheless. Unlike some other puzzle games, swapping pieces around can only occur if they result in an immediate 3-item match. This takes some careful thought at first until the concept is fully grasped. There is no random, arbitrary swapping allowed. Some boards contain items like bombs that help you eliminate problematic pieces. A sun power-up is available that can destroy multiple items can be acquired upon making a 4-item match.

Rise of Atlantis is as G-rated as it gets without involving cartoon characters, flowers, and other happy things, so it is definitely suitable for players of all ages. The educational component may put parents at ease when the time comes to purchase entertainment for their child that is also instructive.

An interesting addition to the game is a 3-D animated screen-saver of Atlantis the player gets after completing the entire game. This screen-saver bonus is only available on the PC version.

In a gaming era typically requiring PCs to have monster specs, it is good to know this game have very minimal requirements. Believe it or not, Rise of Atlantis can run on a 500 MHz Windows 98 machine with as little as 128 megs of RAM and 32 megs of video memory! It is available on store shelves and via Steam download.

Rise of Atlantis is a solid title featuring great animations, beautiful graphics, and an awesome soundtrack. Puzzle addicts will find this game’s puzzle-play to go along the same lines as Tetris, Bejeweled, and the like. With 7 different artefacts to construct throughout 77 levels, this game will keep players busy for a long time to come.
