For those of you that don’t like long reviews :

Age of the Godslayer is critically broken. Don’t buy it.

    The full version :

Well, I received it on the 12th, and after installing it (by the way, auto-install did not work, had to run setup.exe manually), I found I could not patch because it was in its SECOND major fix-patch cycle (6+ hour downtime) since the launch hit the streets on the 11th. Not a good sign. I am sure there are many more to come.

When the servers did come back up, I patched ok. Started AoC, made a character, and logged into game. Went to Options Setup to configure the game, did ‘Apply’, crash to desktop.

Ok, maybe ‘Apply’ is broken. Back into game, repeated setups, selected ‘OK’. Crash to desktop.

Bad feeling about this. Back into game, opened Options, exited with no changes at all. Crash to desktop.

Went to AoC forums, tech support forum. My God! What a mess this is.

I run WoW, EQ2, EVE, LotRO, CoH/CoV, CO, WAR, and many more without issue. So, it is NOT my computer.

    Best guess :

    * AoC:RotG was released without testing it on a ‘Clean’ install system. This is a system without any previous Funcom products installed. They probably only tested it on ‘dirty’ systems, and some AoC required files/directories are already there.

    * There are no Try/Catch blocks arround the critical file creation/update routines. I understand there cannot be such testing around the main play code. But the Options Save is a single point disk write. It should have been protected so Funcom could notify the user of the error, and maybe give them a chance to recover. Or at least report the problem.

    Total Fail

Do go to the Funcom forums before you buy this product.

Its good to see Failcom Employees posting reviews again of this product. Absolutely no way this product deserves Five Stars. Its still a buggy, laggy mess of a game. What’s worse, this “expansion” fixes the issues promised at release of AoC two years ago (DX10 anyone). They have taken me twice related to this title, once at release and again with this “expansion”, I’ll never buy another Failcom product. Lie, after lie, after lie and planted reviews and forum posts by Devs, employees and friends add up to a real hot mess of a business model. Godslayer is a pig in Prada, pretty to look at but nothing more than a dirty swine in reality.

Buggy, which given the track record is not unexpected. but that is not even the problem..While yes, finally the is more to do from 20-40..nothing new here for lvls 60-80, not only that but the new AA system is a huge grindfest. Have a peek at the game’s forums before buying, I was hoping for new life and am not really happy at all, yes the new areas look great, as does the game in general..however, still not worth the asking price nor the monthly IMO

  4. First off let me say that I do not work for Funcom or any other software company for that matter. I have played lots of MMORPG games: WOW, Warhammer, EQ1, EQ2, Guild Wars, EVE, Aion, the list goes on. Is Age of Conan a good game? Yes. Most WOW addicts can’t and won’t see this fact because they can not leave WOW because they have not broke thier obsession with it. Blizzard in my opinion has made WOW so easy to play a 2 year old can do it. Heck, just log in and pour chicken feed on the key board and release a chicken and you could be level 80 in no time. What I like about Conan is its combat system. You got to react and think a little. Don’t get me wrong here, Conan combat is not all that hard either but it is fun to kill mobs. Some say the game is a grind. Hello! All MMORPGs are a grind. If its kill mobs to get an item or raid all day and night to get an item, you are still grinding. So in Conan if I get a quest to kill 20 of these or 20 of that, no problem, the combat sytem keeps it fun for me. I find those that play Age of Conan to be more mature due to its rating of “M”. So the chat is not filled with little kids insulting you for asking any noob questions. (At the end of my WOW days I never said anything in world chat, just not worth it, ask the guild.) Whats bad about it? One start area for all the classes/races of the game. This kinda takes the fun out of alt leveling. Also, I am not big into crafting but you can’t start crafting till level 40. So if you are a crafter you should be ready for that. Conan’s “Living World” could look a bit better falling between Aion (looks great) and WOW (looks like a 70′s cartoon) but is passable. The quest tracker is also not that great but does the job. If you are looking for a new game I would give this game a try.
